Galle Fort, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of Sri Lanka’s most popular holiday destinations, offers a captivating journey through history. Originally built by the Portuguese in the 16th century, the fort became widely known as the Dutch Fort after the Dutch significantly fortified it in the 1700s. These enhancements included robust granite and coral ramparts, 14 bastions, and cannons designed to protect the strategic port from invaders. The British, who took control in the 19th century, added numerous administrative buildings and established the New Oriental Hotel, now the luxurious Amangalla, recognized as one of the first hotels in Asia. Galle Fort stands as a testament to the island’s rich colonial past, inviting visitors to explore its well-preserved architecture and vibrant history.
