Jaffna Fort, originally expanded by the Dutch in 1680, stands as a testament to their architectural influence. Over three centuries later, the Dutch are once again involved, now providing financial support for its renovation following the extensive damage it sustained during Sri Lanka’s 30-year civil war. This initiative aims to restore and preserve this historical landmark for future generations.

Additional Information

Jaffna Fort stands as a testament to the island’s rich and tumultuous history. Originally constructed by the Portuguese in 1618, it later fell to the Dutch who expanded it into its iconic pentagon shape by 1680. Throughout its storied past, the fort has witnessed numerous historical events, including a modern chapter from 1985 when it was held by the LTTE, the Tamil Tigers separatist movement, until it was recaptured by the Sri Lankan army after a 50-day siege. Today, Jaffna Fort houses a garrison of the Sri Lanka Army, with limited visitor access.

Despite the scars of civil war, a visit to Jaffna Fort remains a remarkable experience. While some of the ramparts have been damaged, the outer stone walls, standing 40 feet thick, remain largely intact. The entrance still bears the Dutch insignia, a reminder of the fort’s colonial past. Enclosed by a moat on three sides, local lore speaks of crocodiles that once inhabited its waters. A guard turret and the ruins of the gallows are silent witnesses to the fort’s dramatic history.

At 25 hectares, Jaffna Fort is second only to Galle as the largest Dutch fort in Sri Lanka. Visitors can enjoy a nearly complete circuit of the fort, perhaps timing their stroll to catch a glorious sunset. The site includes a small museum that narrates the fort’s history and ongoing restoration efforts. From certain vantage points, one can view the Jaffna Public Library, another symbol of the city’s storied past.

A walk around Jaffna Fort is more than just a historical tour; it is a journey through time and a search for renewed hope. Embrace the imposing architecture, reflect on the resilience of the site, and leave with a deeper appreciation of Sri Lanka’s heritage.
